Support Services

At Massena Central School, we recognize that all students learn differently and that some students require specially designed instruction and accommodations in order to learn. Special education provides additional services, support, programs, specialized placements or environments to ensure that all students’ educational needs are met so academic progress can be made.

If your child is having difficulty in school, first talk to their teacher. Often, support for students within regular education such as speech and language improvement services, instructional modifications, academic intervention services, and school counseling can help. If these interventions have been exhausted and your child continues to struggle in school, then your child may have a disability which affects their learning. To find out, you can make a referral to the Committee on Special Education to determine if your child meets the criteria for special education classification and services based on New York State eligibility requirements.

Academic Intervention Services (AIS) & Student Support

Academic Intervention Services (AIS) and support are provided to students who:
  • Do not meet New York State academic standards.
  • Have demonstrated a need for extra help in reading and/or math based on testing and classroom performance
A student will receive primary instruction in a core academic areas (reading, writing, math, science & social studies) and also receive supplemental support in a small-group tutorial session. The school adheres to a strict Respond to intervention (RTI) policy.

Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

Massena Central School District provides a variety of special education classroom support and related services for students with an array of learning needs.

All students receive an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which is created specifically to meet the needs of the individual child.  Present levels of educational performance, services, modifications and goals are contained within the IEP.

Approximately 444 Massena Central students receive special education support.  There are currently 27 special education teachers, 44 teacher aides, 1 occupational therapist, 1 occupational therapist assistant and 4 speech pathologists on staff.  Physical therapy services are provided through BOCES.

Parents may want to visit the websites at right to get more information about the special education process.
